In document creating using a Word Processing program, Formatting marks refers to a set of symbols that is used as a visual representaion of how the layout of the document should looks.
For example, the → symbol is used to represent tab character while a dots between words (…) represent spaces between the words. For a single space, you'll use one dot not three.
It is mostly used when creating a draft for a document, or when sending the document to someone else to do the layouting and design job for the document.
