YAHOO! Have Been Breached

We know little about hacking, but this is an information we cannot help but share with you. Yesterday Monday, August 01, 2016, Swati Khandelwal, and auto to published an article that an hacker called Peace or peace_of_mind have been able to breach the security of Yahoo mail, and have stolen 200 Million Yahoo mail users information which include

  • Usernames
  • MD5-hashed passwords
  • Date of Birth
  • Country
  • ZIP codes for United States users
  • And Backup of email from some Users
and he his selling it Dark Web.Swati says that the "Hacker decided to monetize the stolen user accounts before the data lose its value" since Verizon has now acquired Yahoo!

When Verizon/Yahoo was informed about this Swati report that "the company said in a statement:

'We are committed to protecting the security of our users' information and we take such claim very seriously. Our security team is working to determine the facts...we always encourage our users to create strong passwords, or give up passwords altogether by using Yahoo Account Key, and use different passwords for different platforms.' "

Whether the "Peace_of_mind" is true or if it is just a way to exploit money from naive users, we do not know. But what we do recommend is for every concerned individual (Yahoo user) to yield the advice of Verizon/Yahoo which we underline in their statement above, as soon as possible. Or if possible you could start using a good password manager that will create a complex password for your different website account and also remember them for you.
