Why Translators Should Not Translate Words

True, translation can be a tedious work, and as The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Language rightly puts it, “It is sometimes said that there is not task more complex than translation.”

But when translating, it is very important that translators translate not just word, but meaning, and the intend of the original text should also be seen in the translated copy. In fact, it is highly recommended that a translated work should not read as a translation to a reader.

This is because, people are more incline to accept something if they feel that the thing is made for them. Also, as a translator, you will not doubt agree to the fact that no two language’s grammar is alike. So if you focus more on translating words, you might in effect be sending a word message to the reader of the translated copy.
