How To Turn “On” or “Off” The Network Discovery Option On Your Windows 7 Computer

  1. Open Network and Sharing Center from your control panel

  2. On the left section of the screen that appears, click on Change Advanced Sharing Settings.
  3. Click on the chevron icon to expand the current network profile you are signed in

  4. In the Network Discovery section, check on the radio button next to Turn on network discovery or Turn off network discovery as you desire

  5. Click Save changes below. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type in the password or provide the confirmation so as to apply the changes.

Note: Turning on network discovery allows people on the network you are signed in to see your computer, making it easy for sharing you to share your computer date (files and printer) with them, and them with you. While turning it off prevents you from seeing other computer in the network you are signed in. Thereby making it virtually impossible for you to receive files from other people connected to the network.

So use with caution because it can have a great negative or positive impact on your privacy and security.
